JABSOM!

On Friday, July 6th, 2007 we hopped on a plane to O’ahu, where we visited John A. Burns School of Medicine for a few hours before jumping onto another plane headed for Boston. The few hours that we spent there were definitely well spent. Aunty Kehau started us off by playing a few games to help us realize that we do have the skills to be in the medical field. Shortly after, she talked to us about many different professions available to us if we do decide to pursue medicine. We were given a tour around the campus and had the opportunity to experience case studies, which is something that actual medicine students do.
A case study is where we role-play doctors trying to diagnose a patient. We are given papers telling us what is happening with our patient, and read through and discuss the information given to us. In our particular case, the patient, Healani, was pregnant. After completing the case study all of us went into observation rooms. These observations rooms are incredibly interesting because it gives teachers the opportunity to watch over their students as they pretend to examine a real-life patient. Two different cameras and microphones watch their every move and they are graded based on their performance. The Medical School is filled with so many tools and opportunities and we all felt so lucky to be able to have an exclusive tour. It surely was well spent hours.

JABSOM was so much fun! It was a really nice experience for me because I've never even seen, let alone heard about, John A. Burns Medical School. I feel it's so awesome that they incorporate a lot of cultural aspects into the school, such as using native plant designs on the windows and directories, and offering La'au Lapa'au courses.
The Kulia Grill had choke 'ono grinds(: And the mini clinics were super koo cuz we got to touch the tools, and even watch the inside of the rooms from the cameras in another room! This visit was a great opportunity and opened up some options for me when I've completed high school.
I'll go out & tell everyone about John A. Burns Medical School! (:

i remember that day, we had to wake up six in the morning to catch our flight to Oahu. Everyone was so tired but at the school, we had so much fun. Especially when we got to watch the others in the patient rooms.

Going to this medical school was so fun. We had the opportunity to journey through the stimulation rooms, the tutorial rooms, patient rooms etc. I had so much fun, it was like going to the doctors office and being able to experience what they do every day!

JABSOM was interesting--it's new, and it feels like a great learning environment. To me, I wouldn't mind studying there. I really liked the atmosphere, because it always had that home feeling compared to other medical schools or schools in general.

I was sooo sad to leave Kauai but I had a lot of fun at JABSOM!! Aunty Kehau was funny, I loved participating in her activities. It was very effective in relation to working together. The case study was interesting it kind of prepared us to what we would expect at Harvard. The most funnest part at JABSOM would be experiencing what it was like to be a doctor playing with the tools and watching other people on camera. I agree the medical school was a great opportunity for us to spend our last day in the islands. Although it was a great experience I wish we could have stayed longer......The food was ONO.

I had so much fun at the facility, especially being in the observing room with all the cameras. It was like I was in control of security in each of the rooms. I was amazed of how many jobs that there were in the medical field. To my opinion, the only things that I thought were available for me was either being a doctor or a nurse. It was mainly because I wasn't really much into the medical field but after I went to the John A. Burns Medical School, it made realize that there are more opportunities for me out there. It's just wether not I want to do it or go find something else but it did make me feel more comfortable of studying in the Medical Field. Well, See you all later.

JABSOM was cool. I learned a lot of things. Especiallyl since it was a hawaiian staff, it made the learning all the better. Kehau was super funny, and seemed passionate about her job. The tour was awesome especially the equipment they use. The cameras in the room, and then in the other room you could listen and see the whole thing. COOLSTUFF
