While on our trip to Kaua'i we visted Anake Stacy in Waipa.
I was thrilled to hear what our next activity ws gonna be.
It was POI!!
For some of you who don't know I'm from Oahu and we have
a shortage of poi. For you to get poi you need to order 2 weeks
in advance, if you don't ... you won't be getting any poi.
So I don't get poi as much as I use to.
There at Waipa we helped clean and prepare taro to make poi,
and package the poi.
We even got to watch na keiki make poi the"old Hawaiian" way.
Boi did I feel myself up with poi.....
I got to eat the poi of the ti-leaf from na keiki, I got to eat it during lunch.
I was STUFFED and proud of it.
So if you ever need help making poi, let me know... I'll be there before you know it!
Also I got to meet a Wai'anae native, Alika.
An Hawaiian Immersion teacher on Oahu.[wai'anae people are everywhere]
I meet some knew friends (Aunty Loke) and learned that Waipa has the Best POI!

Making poi was very different for me. At first, i didnt know how to do it but after some practice i got the hang of it. The best part was eating it at the end. :]
Aloha e Chiquita. Yes, Waipa poi is helu 'ekahi. I love being at Waipa and helping the 'ohana there make poi for the community. We were also very lucky to receive so much poi, pack it up, and bring it with us here to Harvard to share with our Wampanoag 'ohana, professors, program coordinator, and Hawaiian 'ohana that live here. I think they will really like the poi when they eat it with all the other food we have to share with them. I'm glad you enjoyed your time at Waipa and of course eating poi. malama pono, Kumu Malia
Hey Chiquita! I think we all know by now that you absolutely love eating poi..and I have to say that the poi we made at Waipa was Delicious! Especially since we had the satisfaction knowing that we helped in making it. It was really amazing to see all the kupuna working together and watching their efficiency. I really enjoyed the time we spent at Waipa, and I didn't want to leave.
Right at this moment I wish I had poi. Making poi was so much fun because it was a hands-on activity that I think made some students really want to participate!

Yes the "good" poi is very rare!!! It was hard work. I was actually thankful that we didn't have to actually go in the taro patches :P
In Waipa I could really sense that poi was very sacred and precious. I usually don't like poi but after this experience I admit that I am currently addicted to poi, Waipa poi that is. The food was great everyone was nice. It was a great opportunity that we'll all remember.
Mmm, mmm, `0N0!! Waipa was such a beautiful place. I loved how it was so `ohana style; they made us feel like that was our home too. Cleaning the kalo and packaging the poi was an awesome experience. It felt good to know that we were giving back to the kupuna of Kaua`i, for our hands were helping make the poi that would be distributed to kupuna all over the island. And what`s better than to try the poi you made?! Of course, we got to sample, and also brought bags home. I hope I can some day go back to Waipa!!
Hey Chiquita, how you doing, good, eh, I just wanted to comment you on the poit we made at Waipa. When I first tasted the poi, wow, it was delicious and was very sweet compared to the ones that I eat at home at parties. I kept on splashing myself everytime I dropped a taro into the bucket of water of where all the rest of the taro were in. Then it was like a reaching your hand into a mess of peelings of taro while trying to look for the taro that you dropped. I grandpa (from my mother's side) is full Hawaiian and he will eat probable three or four bowls of poi because he is Hawaiian and he loves it. I believe that poi is something that we must cherrish in Hawaii because it represents our islands and is only grown here in Hawaii.
MMMMMMMM! POI. I'VE MADE POI BEFORE THE TRADITIONAL WAY. THIS POI WAS ONO I GOT TO SAY! I WOULDN'T MIND GOING BACK AND HELPING OUT AGAIN!
I'm glad that we were able to experience the culture while we were on Kaua'i, including making poi. I liked that we were able to sample some poi as well.
Waipa poi...I have never had. Other poi I have had does not compare to Waipa poi. Probably because I helped make it. JK. I cut the taro, and shaved it, and bagged it. It was cool. I never made poi before, and now I can say I did.
