Ms. Betty Lomilomi

I`m sure I speak for each member of the group when I say that our entire Kaua`i experience was FANTABULOUS! We were given so many opportunities to practice being Hawai`i, and going back to our roots. We took advantage of each opportunity and will return home with life lessons and memories to last a lifetime. So of course, we were soooo sad to leave the island!
Our last night on Kaua`i was the night of July 5th, 2007. After a long day in beautiful Hanalei, we got the chance to meet with Aunty Betty and Uncle Fred, who is Kumu Malia`s aunty & uncle, at their hotel room in Kapa`a. They flew in to Kaua`i that very day. The two of them were so welcoming, and FULL of `ike to share with us! Aunty Betty spoke about her background in lomilomi and healing, and who her source or kumu of all her `ike was. Uncle Fred also shared a little about himself with us, telling us that his grandmother was a healer. Then, cramped in the little hotel room, we all stood in a circle and got a short lesson in lomilomi. Aunty Betty showed us simple techniques, but taught us to always pule before beginning with your patient. Some of the techniques she shared were the kikokiko, 'oki'oki, and ku'i. We practiced on the person to our right first, then the person to the left. By the end, everyone was so relaxed yet STARVING! So we said our good-byes and got dinner.
We mahalo `Anake Betty and `Anakala Fred for sharing such precious knowledge with us! We will definitely share what they taught us with our own `ohana when we return home!

`O au iho no,
No`i

I agree with you No'i, we will hold on to memories that will last a lifetime. I was excited when I heard we were going to get a Lomi Lomi lesson from Kumu Malia's aunty. Aunty Betty and Uncle Fred were very welcoming. It was nice of them to open up and share a little bit of their backgrounds with us. I learned things that I never new about Lomi Lomi. My favorite and most memorable part was when 20 of us was squished in the hotel room learning Lomi Lomi and doing it on eachother. Now we all love to Lomi Lomi eachother.

I was bummed that we weren't able to eat Holy's pie that Aunty Betty and Uncle Fred gave us :(

It's interesting how small this world is, bercause Aunty Betty's husband new people I know as well, like my basketball coach. Anyway, I'm glad I learned the basic of Lomi Lomi, because it's something you can use elsewhere and something you can build your knowledge upon.

I love lomilomi. After landing on my back doing a front flip off the pier... you can say I needed that lomi badly.
