Summer Flag Madness

On Saturday, July 21, we went to a dance party called Summer Flag Madness. The event was hosted by BYOP, the organization that we met on the first week. The event was a fundraiser. You were supposed to bring a flag that represented your country. If you brought a flag, the entrance fee was $5 and if you didn't bring a flag the entrance fee was $6. If 1 person brought 10 people or more they got in free. Our group got in free because we were their guests. It was cool because we were kind of like VIP. The event took place at the Boston Community Church in Copley Square. The event was from 7pm - 12am
We arrived at around 8pm and were one of the first one's there. It was a small room with two ceiling fans, a small stage, and a bathroom. At first it wasn't as hot but later in the night we were all dripping with sweat. Our first reaction was to start dancing once we heard the music. Later in the night more and more people began to arrive. Slowly we all started sitting down and resting because we were tired and they were playing music we weren't familiar to. Most of the songs played at the dance was Reggaeton and a little hip hop. They did play two reggae songs that Kumu 'Iokepa requested.
Also, many of us from Hawaii were shocked by the style of dancing that was "popular" amongst the youth at the event. There were mixed feelings toward the provocative dancing that we witnessed. Overall, I had a great time dancing and enjoying the music. It was a great workout and an interesting experience for many.

Hey Ashley! I loved that we were able to experience a little of the dance life in Boston - it's so different from back home. Dancing really relieves a lot of stress and I loved being able to dance with my friends. I didn't know much of the songs though, but seeing different cultures and experiencing them was amazing. I'm sure that was a fun and memorable night for all of us and I enjoyed learning how to "Walk It Out!"

SiCKNESS!!
I thought that the dance party was fun.
Besides all the provacative movement that I was getting grossed out with. I thought that dancing with everyone was fun. Some people really got out and showed their fun sides. It was good fun overall.

My body is still sore from that night! I had to go all out that night. I always dance in the dorms, and everyone knows it. To have an "official" dance, I had to do it for the girls. It was really fun, how we all danced together. No one held back, we went all out. Sometimes it got a little FREAKY in there, and body heat didn't help, but I will always remember that night. It was a girls night out...in BOSTON.

Talk about provacative dancing! Man wasn't that interesting. But hey, I had fun and I think everyone else did too. I enjoyed myself even though the place had no AC! I sweat a lot, but I danced harder than I ever danced before . . . honest.

THE SOCA AND REGGAETON MUSIC WAS CRAZY. Dancing is a little different where I am from but I guess you could say it was intertaining. I got dance with Jenn which was sort of WACKY.

Despite the explicit movements of the others at the dance, I had a blast! We really didn`t need to worry about the way we danced.. we could just let loose, be spontaneous, and have fun! Yeah, I agree... it was an interesting experience. It really made me appreciate the dancing styles seen back at home!

I also agre with Ashley. It was a totally different experience for me and others. What I remember about that night was when a reggae song by Bob Marley was playing all of the Hawaiian students started to skank. And kumu 'Iokepa also.
